Jade dragon in Lijiang ,China is the longest course in the world at a incredible 8548 yards length . However the ball travels a good 15 percent further as its a high altitude course . Designed Nelson & Howarth. Photo credit - Robin Moyer

History & course facts :

The longest course in the world - hold your breath is a mind boggling 8548 yard monster. Don't take our word & hold your breath cause when you play this course in the thin air of the Himalayas at the high altitude you are bound to experience mild headaches & breathing problems. Located at an altitude of over 10,000 ft (3100 mtrs+) in the Yunnan province close to Lijiang town, this course was built in 2001. Built in sync with the terrain & landscape the front & back 9 provide vastly different contours. The front 9 is built at the foot of the mountains & the lake while the back 9 has a more rugged appearance as its built along the slopes & has doglegs, inclines & more challenges. The weather through the year varies between 5 to 24 C making it a almost perfect year long course to play on. The altitude will give you another 20 % carry on your shots so make the best of the lofty heights as you can brag about your 300 yard drives & 200 yard iron play & this will make the course play to a more traditional 7000 yards.

Set in a beautiful valley of Shanghri-La t the base of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain the course was designed with on-site inputs from China's No. 1 golfer, Zhang Lian Wei. The valley faces the famous Jade Dragon Snow Mountain that has eleven snow capped peaks. Due to the nature of the site, little dirt was moved in its construction & the course ebbs and flows with the landscape. Lijiang is home to the Naxi minority, the world last remaining minority whose written language consists entirely of pictograms making it a world heritage site. The caddies tend to be from this community & wear traditional clothes. The name comes from the lore that the peaks of the snow-covered mountain resemble a jade dragon lying in the clouds.

3. The Pines course @ The International, Boston, USA

The International Pines course,Boston

History & course facts:

The Pines course is a 18 hole,8325 yard,Par73 course & originally consisted of 66 acres of open farmland that proved to be ideal for a "short but tricky" nine-hole course. In 1901, Runaway Brook Golf Club Corporation was founded and purchased the land for $1, thus establishing the formal beginning of The International. In 1954 Bert Suprenant purchased Runaway Brook G.C., then hired Geoffrey Cornish, with input from Francis Ouimet and others, to design the regulation course that exists today. ITT purchased the course in 1961 and six years later renamed course The International Golf Club. In 1972, Robert Trent Jones was hired to modify many of the slick greens and challenging bunkers and made it not only the longest course in the world but one of the most difficult. Ownership was later passed to Starwood Hotels & Resorts, who subsequently sold the club to principal owner Daniel Weadock and limited partner Brian Lynch in 1999. In 2001, The International added a new course, the Tom Fazio designed masterpiece known as The Oaks. According to Weadock, "The International will be the only private 36-hole facility in New England and one of the best nationwide. My partner, Brian Lynch, and I are privileged to be charged with the near sacred trust of over 100 years of golf history on the grounds...it is all about golf, friendship, camaraderie, plain old fun and having a good time."

6. French Lick Resort - Peter Dye course, Indiana, USA

French Lick GC-Pete Dye course

History & course facts :

Few things get the blood pumping like the mention of Donald Ross, Pete Dye and Tom Bendelow in the same sentence. Nowhere else in the world can a golfer play courses designed by each of these noted and prolific designers at one resort destination. That is the French Lick resort - 3 designers courses at one location. The longest of the 3 is the Peter Dye course at 8102 yards.

World-renowned golf course designer Pete Dye, often called the "Greatest Modern Day Architect," sketched his early vision for a special sort of golf course in French Lick on a napkin at a local restaurant. His vision has now been etched into the hilltops near West Baden Springs Hotel, and in June 2009 the 18-hole Pete Dye Course at French Lick opened as one of the premier championship Indiana golf courses. Having built golf courses all over the world including great coastal sites, this course arguably could be considered Dye's best inland site offering golfers 40-mile panoramic views of the countryside in all directions. Dye aimed for this to be a "walkable" course, and golfers are sure to feel Dye's signature sting as they tee off from vista-to-vista on this 18-hole masterpiece. The Pete Dye Golf Course has been selected as the host site for the 2010 PGA Professionals National Championship.

With the course located in the rolling hills of French Lick, construction crews cleared land, changing grades as much as 50 feet & strategically routing holes to effectively construct the course on this severe terrain. The Thomas Taggart turn-of-the-century mansion serves as the course's clubhouse and full service pro shop.

8. The Shoals - Fighting Joe, Alabama, USA

Robert Trent Jones Trail@ALABAMA, USA.The Shoals has the extremely long 8092 yard, Fighting Joe course which is the World's 8th longest course.Photo courtesy-Alabama tourism

History & course facts :

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals is home to two 18-hole championship courses and lies between the Wheeler and Wilson dams on the Tennessee River. Wheeler Dam is named in honor of General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Wheeler - the only Confederate General to attain the same rank later in the United States Army. The Fighting Joe is a 8092 yard monster and this links style course is simply good straight-forward golf. Some say the spectacular 17th hole is the signature hole on the course, but the 18th green overlooking Wilson Lake on the Tennessee River will distract you with its beauty, if not its treachery. The Fighting Joe course at The Shoals was the first Trail course to break 8,000 yards. Travel + Leisure Golf named Fighting Joe one of the top new courses in 2004.
